Giftedness
Gifted is not synonymous with smart. The word "gifted" implies a natural talent. Gifted students have an innate ability to think outside of the box. While these students still need to be taught concepts, they can apply the information in innovative and creative ways and make connections that their peers would not consider. Students can be academically gifted in all subjects, academically gifted in only a few subjects, intellectually and emotionally gifted, or creatively gifted. In any case, the attributes of these students are the same: Gifted students learn in a different way and need to be taught in a different way. Giftedness is the potential for excellence, and the gifted education program aims to help these students develop their skills and abilities to the maximum of their potential.
Gifted Education in North Carolina
Article 9B states:
Academically or intellectually gifted students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all
areas of human endeavor.
North Carolina Public Schools believe all students should aim for excellence. Each school system does its best to ensure students are given the appropriate learning environments for their specific needs.
